To further improve the safe operation of nuclear facilities as well as address the radiation safety and environmental safety issues related to the effectiveness evaluation of iodine adsorber systems, CIRP has established a safe and eco-friendly leakage testing method for iodine adsorber (Cyclohexane Method) through independent R&D, with breakthroughs made in the safety injection system design of tracers, the stable measurement of highly sensitive cyclohexane tracers, and the localization of testing equipment. At present, the technical method has been widely applied in Chinese nuclear power plants such as Daya Bay, Taishan, Hongyanhe, Fuqing, etc. The achievement has been included in an international standard under drafting and obtained the China Patent Excellence Award.
There are currently two widely used methods for testing the leakage of iodine adsorbers, namely the Freon leakage detection method and the radioactive methyl iodine method. However, both of above methods have unsafe factors. The radioactive methyl iodine method carries the risk of radioactive gas leakage, while the reagents used in the Freon method can cause damage to the ozone layer. The cyclohexane method established by CIRP takes the advantages of Freon method and eliminates its disadvantages, making it safe, non-toxic and harmless.
